Posted 6/9/2013

On June 6, Blue Note Records launched the iPhone and iPod touch version of its Blue Note by Groovebug App, which was introduced for iPad last year. The app offers an initial catalog of more than 1,000 tracks to stream, as well as interactive content from Blue Note artists such as Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon and Art Blakey.

The iPhone and iPod touch version has all the content and features as the previously released iPad app, but optimized for iPhone. The app now includes a sidebar menu that allows easy access to featured artists, playlists and editorial content, artist navigation, user favorites, user playlists and settings. The Featured Content screen has been redesigned for iPhone and iPod touch, and a “Now Playing” bar at the base of all screens lets the user quickly navigate back to music.

Playlists and featured articles are available from the Home screen. Artist discographies, biographies, videos, news and similar artist recommendations are presented on the Artist pages.

Among the exclusive content is Blue Note vocalist José James’ new 11-song playlist of his favorite classic Blue Note tracks from Donald Byrd, Jimmy Smith, Lee Morgan and others.

“As a label, Blue Note is not only dedicated to pushing boundaries musically, but also to developing new ways of connecting the label’s music with fans around the globe,” said Don Was, president of Blue Note Records. “Groovebug has developed an innovative way to discover and showcase Blue Note music in a way that is consistent with our tradition of uncompromising artistic excellence.”

Other features of the app include detailed liner notes and album information; user playlists; song discussion pages; feature playlists developed by jazz experts; photo galleries; and Twitter and Facebook integration.

Existing Blue Note by Groovebug iPad app users can share their subscription between their iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, with favorites and playlists automatically synced between devices via iCloud.

The Blue Note by Groovebug App is available for free exclusively on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch at The initial download features 30-second clips of all the music contained in the app. To access all of the app’s tracks, a monthly subscription charge of $1.99 via In-App Purchase is required.

Blue Note Records is part of the Capitol Music Group, a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group.
