California-based emerging artists are the focal point at this year’s Winter Fest in San Jose, Calif. The festival will take take place in multiple venues, including Theatre on San Pedro Square, San Pedro Square Market and the Hedley Club in Hotel De Anza, from Feb. 28–March 2.

Bay Area bandleader and hard-bop saxophonist Anton Schwartz—whose new disc, flashMob (AntonJazz), received a 4-star review in the March issue of DownBeat—will lead his quintet with pianist Taylor Eigsti, bassist John Shifflett, drummer Lorca Hart and trumpeter Tatum Greenblatt at Theatre on San Pedro Square on March 1. Eigsti is also scheduled to lead a master class earlier that day.

Among the Los Angeles-based acts scheduled to perform at the festival are the Latin group La Santa Cecilia as well as the vocalists Nikki Hill and Moses Sumney. Also on the bill is bassist Thundercat, whose album Apocalypse was released in July.

The L.A.-based composer-violist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and Oakland, Calif.-based vocalist Mara Hruby are scheduled to give two evening performances on March 1. Atwood-Ferguson will lead a master class earlier that day.

The festival will reach beyond the Golden State’s border when it presents Louisiana-based zydeco band Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys on Feb. 28. Another out of state performer, the New York-based, Azerbaijan-born pianist Amina Figarova—who recently performed at the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Masters ceremony at Jazz at Lincoln Center—will give a master class on March 2, followed by a performance by her sextet.

Among the student band performers at Winter Fest are Santa Teresa High School Big Band (March 1), Valley Christian High School Big Band (March 1), San Jose Jazz High School All Stars (March 1), San Jose State University Jazz Orchestra (March 2) and Folsom High School Jazz Band (March 2).
