Telluride Jazz Celebration

Highlights: The Telluride Jazz Celebration has shifted its dates this year, moving from early August to early June. But this shift in dates does not mean a change in booking, as this festival presents music set in such venues as an outdoor stage in a box canyon surrounded by 13,000-foot mountains, a historic opera house and a balllroom halfway up a mountain reachable via a gondola ride. Top-flight jazz acts perform on a tented stage. Mainstage events start Friday night and take place on Saturday and Sunday. Clubs in a three-block area around Main Street turn Telluride into a mountain party until 2 a.m., where major acts play a second set, and sit in with other groups, and jam-oriented shows take place in the Mountain Village.

Lucerne Blues Festival
Lucerne, Switzerland
NOVEMBER 7-16
Highlights: The idea is to spend evenings watching a dozen leading American acts on two stages with days open to walk the cobblestone streets of Lucerne's Old Town, with its trendy shops and fine old taverns. In its 13th year, the fest treats visiting American musicians like royalty and emphasizes the music over commercialism. Musicians also participate in educational projects.

The Jazz Cruise
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
NOVEMBER 9-16
Highlights: The Holland America m/s Westerdam hosts this floating fest devoted to straightahead jazz. As you travel to Key West, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Belize City, you are surrounded by some of the best artists (and jazz fans) on the planet. From formal concerts to jam sessions, the ship serves as a tropical jazz oasis through the Caribbean.
Lineup: Regina Carter, Ken Peplowski, Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Jeremy Pelt, Greg Fishman, Benny Green, Wycliffe Gordon, Henry Johnson, Nnenna Freelon, Ernie Adams, Tierney Sutton, Tom Scott, more.
